I have started receiving an email from Passport.msn.com recently in the past 3 weeks saying I had requested for a password reset. But I have never requested for password reset on this account. I am not sure if it is some sort of spam from somewhere else or if there really something somebody doing with my hotmail account. Here is what I received in email:

I’ve received exactly the same mail twice on 28th and 29th May 2006. I thought it seemed suspicious so googled it and came here. No further info yet though. I think it’s a scam and haven’t clicked the links.

This one just slipped through the Filters, huh? Definitely a bogus email from some scammer. I did a doubletake when I saw it in my Inbox. Very authentic looking, indeed. I too, googled the subject line and arrived at this site.
The giveaway is “reset … by e-mail”.

My mother got this in her Hotmail inbox, but thought she might have done something to
provoke receiving it? The link that was given to me in the email,
that I was supposed to cut and paste into my browser, could not find.
Here is the orginal email. I went in afterwords and changed her passport 2 diffrent
times…the correct way. Hope nothing else becomes of it.

My password Fritzlee will not get accepted and I printed it out on top line to be sure of F etc. and then erased that… so can I change it to something without a capital letter?

I got the same mail, it looks very authentic but it is too suspicious, I would recomend do not open any of the links included in the message it must be a scam mail.

Help!! I do need help. One day I changed my password, then decided to change again, well I don’t know what happend, but I can’t sign in, and my secret “answer” is not correct. I *also* received that email, twice, Sept 3 and Sept 4 2006. It looked authentic, but I was suspicious so I also followed Google to here. The two links are not identical, the two digits of the reset my password link are “=1” compared to cancel the reset request which are “=0”. Again, those links seem legit.
I think I”m gonna click cancel url. Wish me luck… I”ll get back if anything bad happens (like can”t log in, or increased spam)

I recieved the same E-mail you all talking about. And I did is I click on the link which say cancel the password reset. After I googled and found this website. I felt suspicious about this E-mail so i changed my password, and i set a secret question and alternative E-mail. Just to be safe.

I’ve received this over several days and deleted each time. Got it again today and googled it and came here. My *spidey* sense says don’t click on the link. I’ve changed my password on passport before and I don’t recall them sending me an email to complete it or cancel it. If this is to a scam site and you enter your paSSWORD TO COMPLETE THE TRANSACTION THEN YOUR PASSWORD IS COMPROMISED. Likely the scammer will change it immediately and begin using the account for less than scrupulous purposes.

I have noticed most people showed concerns about using that link to change the password. The best way and the right place to change the password, if required, is to login to Hotmail website and change it from your account profile.

The above links and emails are legitimate. I locked myself out of my account and contacted msn support. The emails and links above were the responses I received. I had to fill out a questionaire then they allowed me to reset my account. If you recieved such an email without requesting it, then someone was trying to hack your account.

The best advice i can give is
DO NOT. click on anything that you think is suspicious, also i would advise people to reset the password from within Hot-mail its self as this would in effect “cancel” the need to “cancel”
Also, i have never heard of a system where by you need to click anything to Cancel a password reset? as you would not of been able to log in to your account in the first place had it taken effect.
The other thing that throws this email into doubt, is the security question, it is there to stop unwanted password resets. as you have to answer the security question in the first place to get it to begin the reset process.
I would say this is a clear case of Phishing
Hints on making a strong password
Make a password something only you are likely to know, and add characters like -,.[]{}#!ӣ$%^&*() to make it stronger
SO say you like astrology and want your password as saturnsrings in stead of just typing saturnsrings, try SATURN’S=RINGS
Also remember that passwords tend to recognize lower and upper case separately, so you could make it even stronger by doing
SaTurn’S=RinGs or an even stronger password would be
SaTurn’S=RinGs2008 as it contains numbers letters, lower case letters higher case letters and symbols.

To the person who is trying to recover an account where he/she neither knows the password or security question. sorry but there is not much hope unless you have added other personal information that can identify the account as yours, and even then, your best bet would be to contact MSN them selves instead of asking on a blog.

Hello, I’ve recived this email for the past two days. when I first saw the email I got suspicious of it and logged out of my hotmail account and tired to log back in using the button on windows live messenger, when I did, it said that I was locked out of my hotmail account due to entering a wrong password to many times. This struck me as being a bit strange since I was moments ago in my email with out any problems. Thinking that someone might be trying to get into my account I requested a password change from windows live messenger, and that’s when I received an email with the exact same URL’s and the exact same body but from different email addresses (The unrequested address is: postmaster@live.com and the one I requested one is: support@passport.msn.com.) I believe that this is where both emails originated from, although I didn’t request the first password reset it may have been, as stated by a Microsoft employee (Liza) in response to Todd’s email about the unrequested password change above from another Microsoft Passport Network member.
“I would like to inform you that another Microsoft Passport Network member might have given an incorrect contact address to our technical support group, which generated the message you received. You may cancel the request by following the instructions under the message “IF YOU DID NOT REQUEST TO RESET YOUR PASSWORD.”
The reason I believe this to be the case (for me at least) is because I also received an email from Skype saying that my hotmail account has been registered to their service, and I never registered or installed Skype on my computer (I did install Skype along time ago, about 2 years but would have received that email 2 years ago and I cant remember ever having to registered an email address.)
Having said that, the thing that strikes me as being odd about Liza’s response is why so many people are having the same problem. I doubt that many people are putting in request for email accounts they don’t have. I will also be emailing Microsoft about this problem (after scanning my computer to make sure there are no viruses on it) and send a link of this blog to them for reference purposes.
Sorry for the long response but I thought it might be some help to some, my question to others is, have you received emails saying you registered for a service similar to Skype (or even Skype?) without doing so. If so this would no doubt confirm what Liza has said to Todd.

I got an email thanking me for signing up for windows live id but I didn’t sign up and just found out my husband didn’t either. I went to the website and checked off that I couldn’t remember my password so I had them send the procedure to change the password and then tried to log on to see what the website was but it said I had an incorrect password. It also said the password only had medium security and I clicked the help link to see why but the link said the certificate wasn’t secure.

I have been trying for 2 days to get on my hotmail account and it won’t let me get on it. All my contacts and important information is in there. I recently changed my password and it says that it will send it to my email address but if I can’t get in there how am I going to know anything. I’m struggling to reset my password, however I can’t remember my secret info. I also don’t know how to reset the info. I get on my browser as I don’t even know what a browser is.
I’m also suspicious of clicking on the link provided. What am I supposed to do, short of getting an alternative account as I don’t seem to be able to change my password.
However, if I retain my hotmail acct. with msn, I’d like to change my password regularly i.e. every month.
So what in heavens name am I supposed to do? As this delima is rather anxiety provoking, to say the least!

Wow, All those statments and comments …Don’t feel alone everyone as I have the reply too in all cases. In my case, I was confused by so many MSN and Windows live etc. that I would go into my Program files and delete anything that said MSN thinking that I could start all over again and use a new account and password, thinking that they are all inner connected in one form or another. So I carred and got so confused that I didn’t know which psassword went with which account? So, I realized that I deleted the necessary programs from my regestry, and that is why I cannot re-connect to my orignal Hot Mail account. Schouldn’t there be a way that if you screw up like I did, that Support could re-boot your orignal account after they realize you are who you say you are. I am glad I remomber my first pet’s name and password for that account. I need my contacts because it has to do with our Environment. ANSWER: “Don’t delete MSN from your regestry” because you loose the tools like I did that allow you to hook back up to your original Hot-Mail account. Please tell me how to get the files I deleted back into my PC so I can enjoy the great advantages of MSN again…………….GOOD LUCK

Hi, I also received this message just now and a while ago. I think it’s someone trying to reset your password, however you received the request by email to avoid the person resetting your password and login in.
If you click the cancel link and you get the notification ‘Password reset cancel’, you’re good. However if the url requires you to login I recommend you not log in and delete the email.

sinds i got this email in my inbox and i noticed that all my contact received it after me and I didn’t send this email my self. All my contacts were deleted the day after from my email accound and from windows live messenger.
When i noticed this i changed my password, but right know i don’t receive any email any more from nobody.

Recently while trying to access my hotmail id it got locked due to wrong password entry. I have followed all the instructions given in the home page to login by retyping password and characters shown in the image. As it did not work I tries to reset my password. Unfortunately password instructions sent to an which no more exists. I also get following message “We sent a link to reset your password to the following email addresses. If you still can’t reset your password, you can come back in 24 hours for more options.” Now it is more than 72 hours but I do know how to get back to Hotmail to get my e-mail id back. Any suggestions? please.
