No eggs in EggPlant?
“No Egg in Eggplant” –> reminds me of my first experience ordering pizza at a pizza place in New Jersey. I was about a week in this country. We asked for a slice of vege pizza and here goes the conversation:
Me: a slice of vege pizza please
PizzaGal: toppings?
Me: what are the options?
PizzaGal: onions, tomatoes, egg plant, …
Me: no eggs please! No meat please!
PizzaGal: that’s right, no eggs, it’s a vegetable
Me: (confused) that’s alright – no egg plant
It was quiet sometime later on when I learned about egg plant is indeed a vegetable

Store groceries in transparent containers….
Recently received an email about seeing a dead mouse in a bag of lentils. A person bought a 8lb bag of toor dhal took out some to prepare food, and poured the remaining to a canister. While doing so, noticed something unusual and figured it was a dead little mouse. hmm… that’s not good. glad they took it back to the store and communicated an issue to the distributors or packing company.
At times, it might be an accident that things get into the sacks of grains at the packing locations, however the best thing that we can do from our side to be cautious is, I think to have these poured into our own transparent canisters (like this person did) so contents can be visible and we be alert before cooking them.
Moral: Pour the grains out of the non-transparent bag into a transparent air tight containers before using any part of it.

No eggs in Egg plant…
We were talking about how amazing the languages are. some one mentioned about “no eggs in egg plant” and that reminds me of my first experience ordering pizza at a pizza place in New Jersey. I was about a week or two in this country and was trying Pizza for the 2nd time. We asked for a slice of vege pizza and here goes the conversation:

Dumrot or Bitter-Rot?
We tried a boodh-kumbalakaayi (white pumpkin) dumrot this evening. I vaguely remember the recipe that my dad makes. He makes the best kumbalakaayi halwa that I have tased so far. I had seen his recipe about 10 years ago, and tried to recall it to some extent and tried it today. garnished it a bit with almonds and ghee. I offered a cup of halwa to my wife. Kumbalakaayi halwa became her favorite when she ate few years ago that my dad prepared. I thought she was going to love it. Apparently, a small bite she took and returned the cup. I was surprised. I tried a bite. It somehow tasted BITTER. hmm… how could a sweet dumrot turn into bitter – remained a mystery.
Ingredients:
Kumbalakaayi (white grated Pumpkin): 1 measure (cup?)
Sugar: 1 measure (cup?) (more the better according to your taste)
Ghee: 3 to 4 tbl spoons
Milk: 0.5 measure (cup?)
cardamom: 1 teaspon
almond slices: 1 tbl spoon
Cashew: 1 tbl spoon
To Make:
Grate pumpkin. Squeeze out all the water. put the grated pumpkin and milk in a bowl and keep stirring on low-medium flame until the pumpkin and milk turn into a paste. You may add a bit saffron if you want. Now, add sugar and ghee and bring it to boil and stir it well. Garnish with almond slices and ghee fried cashews and serve hot.
well, I think i need to check with parents if I have missed anything here to get this turned into bitter.

Fried rice with No Nothing… !!
Vijay‘s Twitter message about Fried Rice with No Meat reminds me of an instance at the Thai restaurant. I was at the Thai restaurant for Lunch on an office event. Looking at the menu, I somehow managed to find something I could eat, but with some modifications. I requested the waiter, “Could you please get me Fried Rice with No Meat, No Fish, No oyster sauce, No Eggs, No Mushroom, No cauliflower, No steamed vegetables, No Salt, No Ketchup, No Oil&Vinegar”?
He nodded his head as though he understood what I said and wrote down in whatever code language the staff could understand. Anyways, when I received the meal, it still a warm vegetables (looks like steam cooked), with salty taste and something I was not supposed to eat and couldn’t eat.
Ended up fully paid for the dish and picked some vegetables which tasted no salt in it.
This was a Thai restaurant in the US, It makes me wonder how Vijay manages when he is in China.

Last week’s road trip… Portland, OR
We had a blast over the last week end. We had planned for a 2 day trip and turned out to be 3 complete days. Our drive to Portland, what used to take 3 hours has turned out to be about 9 hours. We pulled over for a breakfast/brunch at the Olympia Capital building – (Thank you for taking us there, Rajesh) – I had never been to that place before though lived around here for several years now. The structure was beautiful and I haven’t seen such a beautiful structure before.
A statue of George Washington was amazing.
i noticed this note etched on the floor at the entrance.
We spent about 4 hours in and around the Captial building. We then moved towards Portland. We took another break for a lunch – though there was sprinkles and a bit of rain, we enjoyed the lunch by the river side. Food was so yummyyy! I don’t remember the name of the river at least the name of the park was “Paradise point”. Oh! did I say food was so yummyyy! Enjoyed the pongal, chapathis, upma, curd rice, etc etc…
We finally reached portland in the evening, but now being getting busy to find the hotels nearby and stil be able to make it to Rose Test Garden on time and make schedule to watch fireworks that night. Worked out pretty well…
Few pictures from the Rose Test Garden here…
Day 2:
Day 2 was a fun filled day starting with home made breakfast and then towards the scenic drive on Columbia Gorge. I found this link now and wish we had it before to plan accordingly. however, we covered till Stop#9 on this link and we returned back to the hotel in Portland. A few pictures from this drive…
a top view from the mid level of Multnomah falls
Day 3:
Day 3 was somewhat interesting driving through the forests between Portland and Cannon beach on the western coast.[1][2]. Oh I also made other get worried or frustrated not having enough gas in my car when we headed back from the Canon Beach
We managed to find one in Seaside city which is about 8 miles from the Canon.
All in all, it was a great trip.
