Looking for Sanskrit Shubhaashita… [vidyaa dadaati vinayaM…]

I had mentioned about the Sanskrit language(संस्कृतम्), 2liner shubhashithas etc., in one of my blog posts before. One of my favorite 2 liner during my school days was about character and behavior – In sanskrit, it reads like this ….

विद्या दधाति विनयं; विनयं दधाति पात्रतां!

Just in case your browser didn't display the rigt fonts  – this is how it reads in english…
[vidyaa dadhaati vinayaM; vinayaM dadhaati paatrataaM!]

Apparently, I am able to recall only one line and unable to remember the 2nd line. And, in fact, that's how the quote becomes complete. If you happen to know the complete quote – please let me know via comment on this post…. (ok if it is typed in english) thanks in advance. I have even searched on another shubhashita blog collection to some extent – perhaps I might have missed it there.

  1. Hi,

Just came across your blog 🙂

If you still haven’t found the subhaashita, it goes like this: (pls excuse me for possible wrong transliteration)

vidhyaa dadaati vinayam vinayaat yaati paatrataam|
paatrataat dhanamaapnoti dhanaat dharmam tataH sukham||

    vidhyaa – knowledge
    vinayam – humility
    paatrataam – virtuosity/worthiness
    dhanam – wealth
dharmam – right deeds/way of life
    sukham – happiness/joy
