Reasons for Mentorship…

I recently started re-reading a book titled “The art of Mentorship” (i don’t remember the author name at the moment). I have had a mentor at work last year and have one this year. I learned a lot on positive ways of working with mentor. I had once commented about the few of the attributes of mentorship before.

I was reading through Life Beyond Code blog that I often do, and noticed a wonderful article Rajesh wrote about 10 reasons to have a mentor.  A great one to read and start thinking about choosing a mentor if you don’t have one. Personally, I get excited every time I learn new points from my mentor and start implementing them as appropriate. I was talking to a Researcher recently, and one thing I grasped from our conversation with reference to academic advisor/ mentors was: “an advisor/mentor can be the wings and let the mentee grow and fly through the nurturing he/she provides.”

However, one challenge I still have at times is – how effectively can I utilize my mentor’s time every time I meet.

I am also looking for some resources to learn about being a great mentee – in terms of setting the right goals, working through them, communicating the challenges and working around the personal goals and career goals in case they get to be conflicting, the kind of questions to ask the mentors, etc,. Do you have a mentor? please feel free to share any resourcees you can think of for being a great mentee.

  1. Yes, Evne I had the same issue that I went on talking without giving my mentor a chance to talk. I did tell my mentor the same. At that point she said there are different kind of mentors you need to have and different agenda for them. FOr ex: you need to have a bounce bag where you can just tell everyhting and feel light, another in the org to know abt internal tactics, another outside the org to widen our thoughts etc etc
