Happy Ganesh chathurthi

Happy Ganesh Chathurthi – one of the most important festivities in India. I grew up in Bangalore. This is festival is celebrated at a larger scale in cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, and lot of other places. I heard Pune and Mumbai are big. We used to enjoy the festivities back in school days – specially the performance on streets where you would see orchestra, music, relaying movies etc every night. I don’t know if it is still the same practice as the city getting crowded day by day. Lot of children used to start collecting the donations from the houeholds and people around a month ahead of time. Use all that money to get a huge Ganesh idol, perform many activities for 3days and 3 nights all through the month of august or september (month of Bhaadrapada, in fact).

see more about Ganesh Chathurthi and the significanee of this celebration here on wikipedia.

The most significant practice I still remember is going over to see about 101 ganesh idols in the evening of this day. The fun thing is we were told not to see Moon at any instance. It used to be pretty dark when we start going over to every house and on the way, it’s obvious that we would see moon somehow — but the challenge is not to see and get home quickly.

We would finally perform a prayer at the end of day and immerse the idol in water. Most people go to the nearby lakes but we used our well for this purpose as well.

Anyways, just recalled few of those precious moments from my childhood.

Happy Ganesh Chathurthi and enjoy the day …
