Native language in browser address

My understanding all these days was the URLs can only be in english since thats based on the ASCII character set. However, on my way driving back home last night, I happened to turn on FM94.9 (if i remember right), and a news clip mentioned about the capability of having the internet address in native languages and different character sets. That’s great. It also mentioned that it is going to be applied with 11 local languages – viz., Chinese, Hindi,  <hmmm…. i thought i remembered at least 6 to 7 of them.. apparently not>. So, how does it look like when entered in Hindi? like translate www into something? Are there any pointers that we can look into for more information, that you are aware of? Is this going to be a Pro or a Con? interesting though…
