Anita Rowland

I usually go over the links in my blog roll before I go to other blogs. If there are no updates on those posts, i make an assumption that people are busy and probably traveling, exams, project deliveries, etc. The last post from Anita was on nov8, I never made an attempt to either call or email her or Jack (her husband). This morning, I clicked on her blog site and noticed a sad news. Jack has details on his blog

Sorry Anita. We miss you.

The first I learned about Anita was at the meetup when I was signing up for Bellevue / eastside blogger meet up.  I went there at the crossroads mall and met Anita, Jack, Tommy, Alex and others at the 1st meeting. Later on i attended a few of those monthly meetups. Anita was always informative, social – she would greet and know about every individual at the meetup. She remembered all the names. I remember the name tags she always talked about. “hello, I am <name>
She was fond of children. I have seen her with her grand son and going around with him in the crossroads mall.
My wife also admired Anita so much when she met her for the first time at the crossroads meetup.
I have learned from her on how to be energetic and learn from the life irrespective of adversities.
thank you, Anita. Peace

Blogging bar camp event in Bangalore…

I know it is a past event – occurred on April 22 as per this techmag post – However it is great to see such events happening around the world in major cities. I am sure blogging becomes the great way of promoting world wide in few short years. I was reading in one other blog recently that wi-fi, smart phones, blogging, etc., would be day-2-day transactions and information sharing activities very soon.

Research Lecture Videos online

Alex Barnett links to Microsoft Research Guest lectures website where you can watch the great videos. I just watched the video titled "Blink: The power of thinking without thinking". I had sort of read this book long time ago, but now i was able to watch a presentation by the author himself. Got to love this technology, we get to get more information that we need. Thank you Alex for sharing about the videos. Blink is about the making better decisions and how the brain works. He also gives many examples of the some of the decisions made by the people in daily life. Thats pretty amazing. Do check it out.

One other video I just watched (again, there is a link on Alex's blog) was the one titled Naked Conversations –  a fascinating book I read a month ago. I had also met Robert Scoble some time ago in one of the geek dinner events and wanted to read the book once it was released.

Check it out…

The power of blogging…

well, I don't need to write about the power of blogging as there are already number of blogs, white papers, articles and even books out there talking about pros and cons of blogging, the power of blogging, etc etc.
2 books related to blogging I recently read or currently reading:
Naked Conversations by Robert Scoble & Shel Israel
Blogging with MSN Spaces by Katherine Murray, Mike Torres
Naked Conversations is a great book to understand the concept of blogging; why to blog; live examples of people being successful in corporate blogging, etc.,
Blogging with MSN spaces – helps you use lot of cool features in MSN spaces available. I am still half way thru' with this book but I found it very interesting.

I started this post to share my recent observation for the power of blogging. I often read Guy Kawasaki's blog. I often find valuable information for some of the things I wanted to learn. well, recently he had posted about request for topics or ideas to cover in his blog. Apparently, there were over 100 people responded and I am sure there would be over 100 ideas – it is a great resource of ideas for anybody to build on from. It is just amazing.

I don't know why I am thinking about the information age and knowledge sharing related stuffs today. I just remembered a talk I had attended long time ago by The Allison Group where I had heard about geCyberSchaft – that we have knowledge everywhere – it is now hard to process and use what we need. The power of building communities, blogging, forums – most times help build the hi-touch – build the relationship (as Robert says) with people.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Search Engine Optimization 101

I just came across a video clip on ZDNet about SEO 101 – see here for the video clip – You may also find a transcript here

1. site structure
2. Link relationships
3. Content
4. Information Design
5. Code cleanup – Keep it simple – CSS styles, etc
6. Traffic and Popularity
           Blogs, PodCasts, etc.,

check it out … It is a great video.

As I watched and read thru' the transcript – I think (just my opinion) #6 and #3 go hand in hand. I recently read a book about blogging – Naked Conversations – where I noticed many such examples of driving traffic – well let me phrase it properly – it is the content that drives the traffic. Also as I read and understood, one shouldn't be concerned about the traffic – because if you have the right content and if it is authentic, it pulls the audience towards the site. Of course, it still needs to get the initial visibility but then the retention aspect should be stable with great content.

If you haven't read the book – try reading this book as well.

eastside blogger meetup 3/7/06

I was at the bloggers meetup this evening at Crossroads-Bellevue. I met with Jack Bell, Anita Rowland, Tommy Williams, Alex Barnett and Dennis Hamilton. I joined the discussion a little late, I think they were talking about RSS versions, and OPML when I got there. We then started sharing about the technology evolution in software industry, different languages from assembly to 4th generation language. I also heard about Fortran IV and Fortran 77. Oh! This takes me back to my college days where I learned Fortran programing on paper – Yes, writing programs on Papers without having access to computer labs – I know thats funny. So anyways, we were talking about blogging, vi editors, pascal, php, dhtml, java script, C, C#, Agile Management, etc etc…  What are some of your Aha! phases in your earlier days of programming? we shared some of our aha instances writing programming and getting fascinated into software technology.

Dennis shared an article that was written in 1960s and also shared about his career. Dennis Hamilton and I were at SeaSPIN  talk couple of weeks ago, I had missed to meet with him then and we caught up this time.
